The California State Bar has a lawyer assistance program (LAP). LAP provides confidential support for attorneys dealing with substance abuse, stress, depression, or mental illness. The California State Bar pays for three counseling sessions, usually at one hour each.

Though it may great to have someone listen to one’s problems, and help sort issues that may the root of burnout or chemical dependency, one needs to be wary of the actual empathy, training, and advice of therapists.

One therapist who has been contracting with the California Bar for 10 years, and has an office at the South Bay Community Counseling Center, at Winchester Boulevard, in San Jose, CA, summarized that there were only three methods to overcome most mental health concerns: journaling to change perception of the issues, meditation, and antidepressants. He advocated antidepressants. Perhaps because he had no care for his patients.
In two particular sessions with a patient, this therapist seemed overly concerned with the time, and immediately halted the sessions after one hour stating he was out of time. He said he would research and send the patient a list of resources for emotional support, but never followed through. He hardly gave any advice of his own during the sessions, and merely listened to the patient without any feedback.

During the sessions this therapist repeatedly asked the patient if there was insurance for continued therapy. When the patient asked what could be accomplished through continued sessions, the therapist had no insightful response as if he was only interested in billing for further sessions.
