Power Schmoozing: The New Etiquette for Social and Business Success by Terri Mandell discusses techniques to meet people in social and business environments.
Mandell states to have a host versus guest mentality. The host greets people, takes responsibility for how he/she experiences an event. He/she makes his/her presence known.
Mandell suggests meeting 2-3 new people each month. As a result, at least 1 person may bring a new possibility for the future.
When meeting people, Mandell suggests to tell the truth and have eye contact. This brings sincerity and indicates interest when listening to others.
In order to open conversations, Mandell advises to comment on shared realities, not to fire off questions that make the other uncomfortable with a one-sided interview. Mandell states to create opportunities for future encounters. For instance, do not hand business cards before giving a reason to call. Handing out business cards is intrusive and conveys a sales personality. Get to know a prospect before inviting him/her to call. Find out how the person is to be included in one's life.
Escape unwanted conversations by taking responsibility not to miss other opportunities in a room. Stop associating with people who do not support one emotionally. Disconnect from people who control or manipulate.
