The World Health Organization has warned about a potential human pandemic resulting from bird flu. Avian influenza is a viral infection that usually affects wild birds, but may affect poultry.
There have been no confirmed human deaths from avian influenza in North America. Risk areas are mainly in Far East, Russia and Eastern Europe.
If a U.S. employee contracts the avian influenza in a work related situation, such as business travel, the employee may obtain medical coverage under a standard medical plan, including disability, or workers' compensation.
The majority of the reported cases have been transmitted through direct contact with infected birds. No travel advisories are in effect. However, travelers to affected areas might think twice about visiting poultry farms and live food markets. Personal hygiene and frequent hand washing are suggested.
