A Beautiful Mind, starring Russell Crowe in 2001, was about the math prodigy John Forbes Nash, Jr. Nash overcame years of schizophrenia to win the Nobel Prize.

One does not need to be a mathematician to appreciate the story. Indeed, Nash’s story can easily be that of an attorney. It appears that most California attorneys reported as getting disbarred or suspended for unethical actions suffer from chemical dependency or stress. Mental illness among attorneys has become such a concern that the California Bar has a lawyers assistance program that offers free counseling sessions.

A Beautiful Mind addresses cognitive distortions. Sometimes one has strong views on reality because he/she makes predictions or conclusions on situations that are not accurate.
When Nash constantly sees unreal subjects, a fellow professor comments on the difficulty of constantly being distracted by events and people who are not real. Nash responds that everyone is haunted by his/her past, that one does not need to be ill in order for this to occur.

Nash overcame his hallucinations and moved on to become a professor at Princeton University, by constantly acknowledging the unreal subjects that he saw and choosing to ignore them.

Loss of perspective creates negative and pessimistic views of the self, future, and events. Perhaps for anyone to defeat past hurts and life’s frustrations is to become aware of the mind in order to stop feeding destructive emotions.

Feelings and intensities depend on thoughts. If one aims at problem solving, perception might become more precise and emotions more normal and adaptive.
