To be successful at mixers, be active and look for conversations. People are interesting and have common grounds. Learn things from others, but do not stay too long with any particular person.
Be polite. People need to feel respected. Show warmth with a smile. Be approachable, and observe the distance until the other person lets one go closer.
Do not fear strangers. It is not always predictable how others will behave. Outwardness is a benefit. Be curious, open, not afraid. Make friends and obtain business cards from people for relationships.
In determining social outcomes, change from the passive to the active. Do not stand at a party waiting for someone to come. Exploit the event to meet the agenda. Have a purpose for attending events, not go for the heck of it. Go for a reason and then review whether there was success when leaving. Be realistic about expectations. Do not think goals will be obtained right away.
Not everyone will want to talk. Don't take things personally. Be willing to try again. Move on to the next person. Conversations fail for many reasons.
