On March 16, 2006, President George Bush, signed the Stop Counterfeiting in Manufactured Goods Act. The law prevents the using of false labels and packaging in the marketing of counterfeit goods when such goods are shipped into the U.S. Prior to this law, the false labels and packaging assisted traffickers in marketing counterfeit items.
The law makes it a crime to sale counterfeit stand-alone labels and packaging that can be affixed to counterfeit goods. Prior to the law, it was only forbidden for labels and pakaging to be physically affixed to items.
The law also allows for the taking and destroying of equipment used in making counterfeit items in order to prevent counterfeiters from reusing the equipment to continue making counterfeit goods.
Besides criminal penalties, counterfeiters are required to pay back to legitimate businesses the profits they make from using their trademarks.
