Not all presentations can be planned. Someones one may be called to a meeting to discuss a topic one has not researched, or rehearsed a speech for. Sometimes a presentation may be cut short due to the shortage of time.
In order to improvise, one must learn to empty the mind. Actors are forced to be someone different from who they are all the time. They are able to do this by learning about their characters. They observe eye, movement, and speech patterns. This awareness and sensitivity allows one to be a good listener and speaker. Balance between listening and speaking. Spontaneity involves adding something new to to allow for different directions.
Carrying out a routine is not improvising. Be able to make up something on the spot and believe it to be true. Improvising involves being comfortable in new situations. Plan only the structure, and improvise the rest.
Realize though that a person's presence is shown through the person's posture and walk even before he/she enters a room. Look at other people when speaking. Eye contact shows sincerity. Be aware of the people who are present in the audience. Concentrate and observe what other people are doing. Be aware of the subconscious. What someone is saying is not necessarily what someone is thinking. What someone is thinking can lead a conversation to a different direction.
