Guarding the Mouth

The corporate attorney is involved in many sensitive subjects. An employee may disclose a mental illness, the need to see a therapist. An executive may disclose a new strategic plan that is not accepted by an entire staff.

Sometimes the wise action to take is to pause before speaking. Saying nothing at all may also be the right way to go. Whatever action taken, it is good to remember that what someone says gives others an impression about that person. For instance, someone may say he likes working with you all the time, but if in reality he dislikes you, then you would never realize the deep down resentment this person has against you.

However, in the end whatever is going on in someone’s heart will eventually come out of a person’s mouth. Someone who does not speak the truth, such as saying what they think others want to hear, will soon indicate that he/she is not a friend.
It is important to be observant of a person’s control during conversations to ensure they stay rational. It is not necessary to always take sides, and it is alright to allow other people to resolve their own conflicts.
