Applying the Martial Way to Negotiations

Ever participate in a contract or settlement negotiation where the parties start yelling at each other?  Try to negotiate the martial way during the next negotiations, and see how anger can be diffused.

Courage

Courage comes from speaking the truth, keeping our word, being dependable, even in difficult circumstances.  Win the trust and respect of others and ultimately make ourselves worthy of respect.

Balance Opposites

Balance opposites such as strength with gentleness, agility with power.  One never eliminates the other.  Both are necessary.  Act with, not against, the forces of nature.  Strictly aggressive, combative behavior leads to failure.  Serve with loyalty.  Trust friends.  Never retreat from battle (finish what is begun).  Respect the opponent.

Confidence

We walk and act confident because we are fit, strong and balanced.  Confident people are seldom victims.  The self knowledge that we develop should make us brave enough to defuse confrontations, walk away from trouble, and avoid dangerous situations.  Confidence is the foundation of steady composure under any circumstance.  Be prepared, pay attention, spot dangers and signals, overcome the ego.  Develop the body, strengthen the mind.  Strive to be humble, honest, dedicated.  Indomitable spirit means refusal to quit, allied with the belief that our abilities carry us to victory.  Indomitable spirit allows us to prevail the opponent, mentally and physically.

Martial Way

Develop harmony, balance, self-control.  Control anger.  Anger fogs the ability to think and act with clarity and focus, leads to conflict rather than resolution.  Control breathing.  Breathe to regulate the heart rate, clear the mind, face fears, and calm emotions.  Practice tolerance.  Show respect and love for humanity.

Find the inner strength to avoid confrontation.  People fight because they are insecure.  One man proves he is better or stronger.  The man who is secure within himself has no need to prove anything and can walk away from a fight with dignity and pride.  A true martial artist is strong inside and has no need to demonstrate power.
